Ethiopia Made Significant Progress in Green Legacy and Ensuring Food Sovereignty: PM Abiy

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said that Ethiopia has made rapid and significant progress in combating climate change through ambitious climate action and a green pathway for growth and prosperity in three key areas.

These include afforestation, reforestation, and green legacy; ensuring food sovereignty; and transitioning to green energy.

In his keynote address to the Climate Implementation Summit of COP27 in Egypt, the premier said climate change is a constant source of concern for the global community.

East Africa in particular has suffered repeated droughts and floods, and Ethiopia is in the eye of the storm, he pointed out.

“Nonetheless, we are transforming our difficulties into opportunities. We are strengthening our people’s resilience and safeguarding our natural resources, all while working to provide reliable, accessible, and affordable renewable energy to our citizens and the region.”

According to him, Ethiopia  has  made rapid and significant progress in combating climate change through ambitious climate action and a green pathway for growth and prosperity in three key areas.

These include afforestation, reforestation, and green legacy; ensuring food sovereignty; and transitioning to green energy.

They are critical topics of discussion under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that are part of the African climate agenda, he added.

Ethiopia’s position is consistent with the collective interests and statements of the African Group of Negotiators (AGN) as well as the Group of 77 and China coalition, in order to build a stronger joint negotiating capacity at the United Nations on climate change issues.

Ethiopia’s Green Legacy is a proud contribution to this effort that complements the country’s  nationally determined contributions.

“Four years into the Green Legacy Initiative’s implementation, we have planted 25 billion seedlings, which equates to 250 seedlings per Ethiopian. The impact could be equivalent to removing 64 million gasoline-powered vehicles from the road for an entire year.”

The Green Legacy Initiative is now the most extensive afforestation and reforestation program in the world, second only to the Amazon, Abiy noted.

Ethiopia has also put over 700,000 hectares of existing biodiversity and carbon-rich natural forests under a sustainable participatory forest management scheme, in addition to tree planting afforestation and reforestation efforts.

The Green Legacy has fostered a flourishing national green culture, tripling the number of nurseries to over 120,000, and seedlings have been shared with neighboring countries to strengthen regional cooperation for transboundary ecosystem management.

“Our Green Legacy Initiative will undoubtedly help to remove hundreds of millions of tons of Carbon dioxide equivalent from the atmosphere and reduce deforestation, implying Ethiopia’s significant contribution to global climate change mitigation efforts.”

Ethiopia’s tangible contribution to the overall afforestation and reforestation pledge is impressive by any standard, but it is even more impressive when it is funded primarily through domestic resources and efforts, the PM elaborated.

Ethiopia plans to restore an additional 22 million hectares of degraded land by 2030, building on its previous success. In addition, it is creating a green fund and will pursue carbon trading schemes to help raise additional funds.

Despite the fact that Ethiopia is one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots, seasonal food insecurity is a persistent challenge.

“We have successfully demonstrated in recent years that it is possible to build resilience while also protecting people’s livelihoods. With the Green Legacy, 1 in 50 seedlings is set to improve food security and income generation. In addition, 500 million plants are fruit-bearing, producing papayas, mangoes, and avocadoes.”

The premier also indicated that Ethiopia’s wheat production program has also been a success.

“During the dry season, the climate SMART irrigation system produced approximately 2.5 million tons of wheat. We intend to cultivate 2 million hectares during the dry season alone in 2023, paving the way for food self-sufficiency and wheat export the following year.”

The government is committed to developing climate-resilient regenerative agriculture and food system transformations that will increase food production, promote health and nutrition, safeguard our valuable land and natural resources, and protect the most vulnerable communities.

Speaking on the green energy transition, Abiy said that Ethiopia has seized the opportunity to capitalize on its substantial renewable energy potential.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is expected to be a vital source of energy for the country and the region. Despite Ethiopia’s significant renewable energy potential and substantial generation and transmission infrastructure, the country’s electricity access rate remains below 50 percent.

“We are working hard to diversify and expand the energy mix to include other renewable energy sources such as geothermal, wind, and solar, with the goal of achieving Universal Access by 2030 through on-grid and off-grid technologies.”

He further stated that “in the spirit of advancing partnership and collaboration, Ethiopia has been exporting green energy sources to neighboring countries, demonstrating our commitment to connecting countries through the East African Power Pool’s emerging interconnected grid.”

The PM pointed out that the African COP is an excellent opportunity for Africa to express its collective stance.

Africa is the most vulnerable to climate change, while accounting for less than 5 percent  of global greenhouse gas emissions and approximately 17 percent  of total global population.

Nonetheless, Africa receives less than 5 percent  of the world’s climate fund, which is mainly in debt. Combating climate change requires a collaborative effort and adequate funding.

“While we are proud of our achievements and are meeting our nationally determined targets, there is still work to be done to protect our people and the environment. Ethiopia is, indeed, in the eye of the storm.”

Climate change could push more than 100 million people into poverty by 2030, if appropriate adaptation measures are not taken.

“Ethiopia is near the bottom of the carbon emissions scale, but it is disproportionately vulnerable to climate change. Eight out of ten Ethiopians live in rural areas and rely on erratic rain-fed subsistence farming. Those who have made the least contribution to climate change suffer the most. These inequities cannot persist.”

The premier stated finally that Ethiopia’s home-grown economic reform program is putting the necessary investment conditions to attract more private and concessional climate financing. “Nonetheless, concessional funding is required to scale our successes in proportion to the growing challenges.”

A delegation led by Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency, Director General, Mahad Mohamed Salad, arrived in Addis Finfinne today for a two-day working visit, according to the National Intelligence and Security Service.

Senior officials of the National Intelligence and Security Service welcomed when the delegation arrived at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport.

It has also been stated that consultation will be held with the leaders of the National Intelligence and Security Service in the areas of exchange of information to prevent terrorism, capacity building, and joint operations to ensure regional peace and security.

It is to be recalled that recently, a delegations drawn from the National Intelligence and Security Service, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, National Defense Forces and Ministry of Health visited Somalia and provided medical equipment and medicines to the Somalis who were injured by the terrorist al-Shabaab attacks, according to the information of the National Intelligence and Security Service.

Ethiopia is Committed to Peacefully Solve Conflict in North, Says DPM and FM Demeke Mekonnen

Ethiopia Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen has reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to peacefully solve the conflict in the north.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister met today with Katja Keul, Minister of State at the Ministry of the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany.

During the occasion, the two sides pledged to scale up the bilateral relationship between Ethiopia and Germany.

The two countries need to cooperate on issues related to energy, climate change, peace, and security, according to the deputy prime minister.

He stated that Ethiopia is dedicated to finding a peaceful solution to the conflict in the north. The ICHREE’s report is politically motivated and biased, Demeke added.

Katja Keul for her part said Germany supports the peace process to end the conflict in the northern part of the country.

Peace Option: Just Tactic for Terrorist TPLF

True to its nature, terrorist TPLF is using the genuine call for peace by the Federal Government of Ethiopia as a strategy of deception and manipulation on its supporters in the west and UN systems. A recent leaked documents of the terrorist group entitled: “ A Strategy and Tactic to the Final Chapter of War”, revealed that the group has made it very clear that the terrorist would never opt for peaceful talks but would instead use it as a tactic—i.e. to buy time for its war on the people and government of Ethiopia.

The document, prepared in Tigrigna Language has identified major strategic objectives which the terrorist claims would help facilitate its advance to Finfinne and seize power.

From the outset, the document clearly stipulates that the terrorist group has no interest in dialogue. The leaked document reads: “It shouldn’t be missed that one of the vital things in getting the upper hand during war is by rallying many forces in the international community stand behind your side, making believe that you are determined to solve problems through peaceful means.”

The peace rhetoric by the group is simply a window dressing of getting international support; for otherwise, its true nature is to dismantle the Ethiopian state and break the country apart—eventually serving the interests of Ethiopia’s historical enemies. In fact, the strategy is not as such a new document; rather, it has been under implementations since its establishment, more particularly, over the last four years.

TPLF reinstated this strategy by manipulating the rhetoric of peace to the international community; actually, it was  making preparations to launch another round of war on bordering regions, Amhara and Afar regions. “We (TPLF) have repeatedly informed our people that we don’t accept the proposed peace alternative,”  the document pointed out. While all the international organizations and the western powers certainly know the truth about TPLF—i.e. it does not want peace, it is only a few countries which speak up the truth about the terrorist.

It is indeed sad to note the blind eyes of western world for they fail to humanely share the appalling pains and atrocities TPLF inflicted on civilians in Afar and Amhara and condemn such atrocities afterwards.

TPLF totally rejects the peace initiative, the African Union (AU), Horn of Africa High Representative, Olusegun Obasanjo, has been pushing forward.

“Our lasting peace is not guaranteed through peaceful means. Instead, it is guaranteed through our muscle. The question of the people of Tigray can be addressed in the future only through advancing to Finfinne, overthrow Abiy’s government and constitute a new government by paying whatever life sacrifice it may require us,” the leaked document stated.

With regard to the support it is getting, TPLF has officially disclosed that it is getting armaments from foreign supporters who also vow to destroy the country through prolonged destabilization. The plane, which violated Ethiopian airspace and downed by the Ethiopian Air force, suggests that some countries may have airlifted armament in support of the group’s efforts to destabilize the country.

The self-styled Samri group members, who are under UNHCR humanitarian protection in Sudan, tried to infiltrate into Ethiopian territories and launch attacks on several occasions. Reports assert that this group is armed and organized by the allies of terrorist TPLF. While it is the duties of the host country and UNHCR to ensure that refugees entrenched in the refugee camps are only refugees, reports have been circulating on social media that this group has been provided with arms and logistics by TPLF’s international collaborators to destabilize the country. The testimonials from Samri captives and those mercenaries from historical enemies show that terrorist TPLF has never been alone in attempting to destroy the superstructure system in the country.

The terrorist group also ensured that the continuous supply of relief food meant for Tigray people must be diverted to the army in order to strengthen the logistics for its war on Ethiopia, to which the terrorist group vowed to  persuade the suppliers to siphon in more supplies to make sure that its army is well fed. This shows the unofficial or some kind of tacit agreement reached between relief supplies and the terrorist group to let them use relief supplies and other consignment for the war against the people of Ethiopia.

On several occasions, the Ethiopian Government issued statements calling on international aid organizations for transparency in their humanitarian operations in Tigray ensuring that the assistance had to reach to needy people at the grassroots level, not for the purpose of war. However, all of them kept quiet about it—implying that there might have been some conspiracies behind it. The UN and the western powers are never ready to make terrorist TPLF accountable for its aid diversion and starving the Tigray people.

The leaked document further states that TPLF will continue to support local ethnic groups with arms and finance to incite destabilization across the nation and make the government busy only with controlling conflicts here and there. On the other hand, TPLF will also conduct propaganda, disinformation and misinformation on local TPLF affiliated social media outlets, you tubes and on international mainstream media to terrorize the Ethiopian public.

All told, the terrorist TPLF has clearly indicated that it is fighting to overthrow the democratically elected government of Ethiopia and restore itself to power. Terrorist TPLF is attempting to implement the above mentioned strategies counting on the blessings it gets from local, regional and international allies either in diplomatic support, information warfare and arms smuggling and put maximum pressure on Ethiopian government and weaken the country.

There are enormous international conspiracies being hatched against Ethiopia under the pretext of human rights  and democracy. The impartial and biased report issued by International Commission of Human Rights Experts on Ethiopia (ICHREE) is a vivid manifestation. Asked about the overall intent and purpose of the report, the  American Political Analysts Andrew Korybko strongly criticized  the stance by the commission is deliberate and intended to add ammunition to the information warfare campaign against Ethiopia, particularly its democratically elected leadership and the armed forces under its command.

Ethiopia Launches Global Campaign to Mobilize Resources

The Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Finance, in collaboration with the Ethiopian Diaspora Service and Ethiopian missions worldwide, launched a month-long campaign to mobilize resources for national causes.

A virtual conference was held on Tuesday presided over by Finance Minister Ahmed Shide and Foreign Affairs State Minister, Ambassador Birtukan Ayano, who were joined by the heads of Ethiopian Missions Abroad, Director General of the Diaspora Agency, Dr. Mohammed Endris and diplomats from relevant departments.

In announcing the launch campaign, Ahmed Shide and Ambassador Birtukan Ayano urged all Ethiopian missions organized into clusters to jump right into the campaign and expedite the mobilization of much-needed resources.

The conference recognized the accomplishments made last year in terms of resource mobilization for multiple national causes and the use of technology to achieve the goal, but it also identified the gaps in transaction channels and account communication.

Issues observed last year about transaction channels and related accounts were addressed during the virtual conference discussion, with communication held between the Ministries of Finance, Foreign Affairs, and the Diaspora Agency.

Ambassador Birtukan urged cluster coordinator missions and all missions to strengthen cooperation with Ethiopians, people of Ethiopian origin, and friends of Ethiopia by leveraging technology and implementing creative and user-friendly mechanisms to achieve allocated resource mobilization.

UN Pledges Support to Improve Ethiopia’s Human Development

The United Nations pledged to provide the necessary support to Ethiopia to improve the country’s human development sector.

The United Nations Development Programme   (UNDP) has launched the Human Development Report 2021/22 today entitled: Uncertain Times, Unsettled Lives; Shaping Our Future in a Transforming World.”

The Human development summary capturing achievements in the Human Development Index (HDI)  and complementary matrices that estimate gender gaps, inequality, planetary pressures and poverty, it was indicated.

Moreover, the HDI is a summary measure for assessing long-term progress in three basic dimensions of human development including long and healthy life, access to knowledge and a decent standard of living.

Between 2000 and 2021, Ethiopia’s HDI value changed from 0.287 to 0.498, a change of 73.5 percent, it was pointed out.

Speaking to ENA UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ethiopia, Catherine Sozi said country at this moment is going through a lot of difficulties that are impacting on the lives of people.

She added Ethiopia has been facing conflict in the northern part  and drought in some parts of the country.

In spite of all these crises, the coordinator noted Ethiopia is actually trying to remain up in the Human Development Index.

This gives hope for the UN system that Ethiopia can achieve better human development progress as well as will achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), she pointed out.

“Am optimistic that Ethiopia can move through achieving the SDGs. But certain investments have to be made to make sure the crisis around conflict and drought are ended,” the coordinator said.

She also emphasizes the need for Ethiopia to invest in quality education and invest in health for human development success.

The UN will give all necessary support to Ethiopia in this regard, she pledged.

UNDP Resident Representative, Turhan Saleh said on his part Ethiopia’s Human Development Index of 0.498 out of one puts the country in the low human development category.

However, the rank is at stable situation compared with other countries across the world.

“The important thing is that we have seen the past two years, human development fall in 90 percent of countries across the world. This dangers and in first time happened. In Ethiopia we are not going as quickly forward, but we have not lost.  So we are now in a kind of at stable situation.”

Noting that because of conflict millions of children have not been to school for a long time, he urged Ethiopia to invest in peace, health and education for permanent success of human development.

PM Abiy Ahmed Extends New Year Best Wishes to All Ethiopians

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has extended best wishes to all Ethiopians on the New Year that will be celebrated on Sunday, September 11, 2022.

In his best wish message,  the PM said the concluded Ethiopia year has been a year that the nation was tested as enemies have intensified attacks in coordination; others deployed an army to massacre innocent people in the country, and launched fake information campaign through forums and media outlets that can exert international pressures.

Conversely, Abiy noted that the previous year was also a year in which several successes were registered in the country that would help the nation to enhance its future hopes.

During the year, the nation has demonstrated its capabilities of defending enemies that carried out organized attacks against the country; he said adding that the country has also courageously decided to find ways to overcome the recurrent sanctions imposed on the nation.

The year has also been a year that glimmered hope in ensuring the food self-sufficiency efforts of the country, the Prime Minister stated.

Celebrating a new year makes sense only if we are able to move through time, the premier said noting that the country needs citizens who are capable of defeating time and innovative that can transform its history of hunger with prosperity, war with lasting peace; the history of division with common national unity; its history of backwardness with modernity.

Ethiopia needs citizens that can bring new solutions and strategies to existing problems, the PM pointed out.

“Ethiopia wants someone to write a new history to make the New Year truly new,” he underlined.

“Changing times is inevitable. Changing the era itself is the work of heroes,” he said, adding Green Legacy, summer wheat cultivation, the beginning of exploiting the tourism resources in our own capacity, the efforts to address national problems through dialogue, endeavors being exerted to ensure self-sufficiency in domestic revenues with a view to become free from external influences, are some of the successes registered over the past year.

“But these are indications not final goals, he said pointing out that there are several issues to be addressed in the future including the need to create a strong public service delivery free from theft, effective justice system, reduce cost of living, increase productivity of manufacturing and agriculture sectors as well as enhancing national unity, avoiding conflicts, boosting foreign relations, establishing good governance, strengthening democracy, by making good use of the blessings we have.”

Finally, Prime Minister Abiy wished a successful new year to all Ethiopians urging the people to make the new era newer by intensifying their efforts to bring changes in all aspects of the nation.

Enkutatash Offers Hopes and Inspirations For All Ethiopians

The thirteenth month of sunshine in Ethiopia, five or six extra days at the end of the year, is a week of preparations for Ethiopians who celebrate the Ethiopian New Year (Enkutatash). Ethiopians celebrate New Year according to the Julian calendar which falls on the 11th of September or on the 12th during a leap year.

The Ethiopian New Year is characterized by the end of the long rainy season, a bright sky and a dazzling sunlight. The countryside turns into yellow daisies (adey abeba), which covers the entire fields in rural areas of Ethiopia at this time of the year.

The festival is celebrated with the singing of special songs dedicated for this holiday by girls dressed in traditional clothes and giving the bouquets of flowers (adey abeba), they collected from the fields to each household. In return, the girls often receive a small gift, usually money. On the eve of the New Year, boys gather in groups singing songs that herald about the New Year locally called Hoya Hoye. They sing, moving from house to house and receive gifts usually in the form of money.

The celebration of the Ethiopian New Year, Enkutatash, meaning the “Gift of Jewels” is believed to be celebrated since the time of the Queen of Sheba. During her visit to King Solomon of Israel in Jerusalem, the Queen gave gifts to the King with 120 talents of gold (4.5 tons) as well as a large amount of unique spices and jewels, as mentioned in the Bible.

When the Queen returned to Ethiopia her chiefs welcomed her with precious jewels to replenish her treasury. Enkutatash has been celebrated since then.

Lighting bonfire on the eve of the New Year is also part of the celebration. Male members of the family light a bonfire made of branches and leaves of trees (Chibo) to say good bye to the concluding year and welcome the New Year hoping it will be a bright year and bring peace and prosperity for the family and the country as a whole.

The Ethiopian calendar is derived from the Alexandrian or Coptic calendar. Like the Julian Calendar, it adds a leap day every four years without exception.

The Ethiopian calendar has twelve months of 30 days plus, a thirteenth month (Pagume) of five days or six days every leap year. Pagume, is the 13th month in the Ethiopian calendar, comes from the Greek word epagomene, which means ‘days forgotten when a year is calculated’.

As the Ethiopian counting of years begins in year eight of the Common Era, a calendar era often used as an alternative naming of the AD, there is seven to eight years gap between the Ethiopian and Gregorian calendar. This mainly results from an alternate calculation in determining the date of the Annunciation to Virgin Mary.

The Common Era (AD) follows the calculations of Dionysius, a 6th-century monk, while the non-Chalcedonian countries continued to use the calculations of Annius, a 5th-century monk, which had placed the Annunciation of Christ exactly eight years later. Because of this, on 11th of September 2016, it will be 2009 in the Ethiopian calendar.

Enkutatash is a very festive occasion and a get together for families. The rainy season is the busiest time for families in rural areas, as it is the main season in the highland areas for cultivation of crops. The end of rain means time to get some rest and celebrate.

The beginning of the New Year accompanied by a bright sky, a dazzling sunshine and a countryside turned into gold with the daisies (adey abeba), unique to this time, is also among the prime time for tourist arrival. It is time for an increasing number of tourist flows to Ethiopia, with nine inscribed world heritages and five on the tentative list.

The Ethiopian New Year is celebrated by all Ethiopians here in Ethiopia and by Ethiopian’s in the Diaspora. Followers of all religions in the country, including Christians and Muslims celebrate the Ethiopian New Year with a lot of festivities.

The Ethiopian New Year is a source of inspiration for all Ethiopians. Farmers in the rural areas tend their farms expecting a bumper harvest in the next season. School children are getting ready for the new academic year while university students throughout the country are preparing themselves for yet another year in college. Enqutatash offers hopes and inspirations for all Ethiopians.
